According to a study by psychologists, your personality type directly affects your taste in music and vice versa. The University of Cambridge and Bar-Ilan University created an online survey to uncover details of the music preferences and personalities of more than 285,000 people in 53 countries.
In addition, there was also a website that saw a total of 71,000 visitors from 34 countries rate music clips of various genres. So this was a very large study from which it was possible to draw some conclusions.
Based on these surveys, it was possible to extract five different personalities based on the musical genre of these people. Check it out below.
People who are more “open” and have a creative spirit tend to prefer more refined music, which can be divided into inspirational, complex or even dynamic. However, those who think “outside the box” and are innovative tend not to identify with slow and melancholic music.
Happier people tend to like calm music. The study found a strong correlation between being a nice person and liking soft music. But they are also people who love all genres of music, without any particular taste.
These people tend to like dancing, liveliness and modern music. Because they are people who feel comfortable talking to strangers, or just don't find it difficult to ask questions and start a conversation with a group of people (random or not).
The more restrained, thoughtful and imaginative people prefer classic genres like opera, for example. This is because, most of the time, the sound of this type of music is more restrained and less explosive, leading to a feeling of identification with the listener.
On the other hand, people high in neuroticism are extremely selective and generally have a hard time liking any type of music. But some of them like “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and other grunge (alternative rock) type tracks.
