In 2023, the New Secondary School comes into effect and will bring changes to basic education

A change was approved by the Ministry of Education (MEC) in February this year, approving a new teaching format for the final years of basic education. Although the proposal has already been approved for almost a year, many people do not know which educational model will be implemented in New High School.

The applicability of the proposal is scheduled for the year 2023, serving students in the 1st and 2nd years of EM. The changes are related to the teaching plans of these school years, and the curricular matrix will also undergo changes, indicating that teaching will be flexible to the student's choices during their training.

New High School

The focus of the new proposal is on the students' school records. The update predicts a different course for the final years of basic education and will not be similar to other years of education. Basically, students will not go through a structure of subjects formed during these three years, as is usually the case in schools.

With this, the New Secondary School foresees the academic history of the students based on the subjects they need to take, but will be based on subject areas, similar to the distribution organized by AND EITHER (National High School Exam):

• Natural sciences;
• Human and social sciences;
• Mathematics;
• Languages.

Change in the Common National Curriculum Base

The curricular matrix that guides Brazilian education is called the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC), acting as an aid for teachers and school institutions, containing all the study grid that the student needs to follow throughout the life.

For the change, it is expected that 60% of the students' workload will follow the structure that is already known by the students, through the knowledge and skills that are aimed at High School.

The other 40%, therefore, will be based on the interests of the students themselves, selecting the training itineraries. The choice of this itinerary will be based on the areas of knowledge that are structured for teaching.

The new curricular matrix: what contents will be covered?

The BNCC points out which will be the training itineraries for each area of ​​knowledge. Check out:

• Portuguese language: writing, reading, text production;
• Languages ​​and their technologies: functioning of languages, text interpretation, linguistic variations;
• Mathematics and its technologies: analysis of tables and graphs, variation of magnitudes;
• Applied human and social sciences: study of political processes and events;
• Natural sciences and their technologies: conservation of systems related to the amount of matter and energy.
