Do you like to eat sardines? This has been an increasingly popular option on the Brazilian table, due to its practicality, reasonably affordable price and protein offer. However, when preparing your salad or pâté, you must overcome that doubt: can I consume the oil from the can of sardines?
The oil is in the can of fish to preserve the food. This way, it stays suitable for consumption for a longer time. This makes it an offer of protein to store and consume little by little.

In an interview with O Globo, the food engineer of the Brazilian Association for the Defense of Consuming Proteste, Mylla Moura, brought the answer: yes! We can ingest that oil.
According to her, some soluble and important sardine nutrients end up migrating to the liquid. “An example is the Omega 3. Part of its micronutrients, such as EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), pass from the sardines into the oil, ”she explains.
It is worth remembering that omega-3 plays an important role in our body, especially in the construction of cellular structure. As it is not synthesized by the body, we must consume it through food.
The food engineer claims that oil can be used to replace other fats in everyday life. For example, when making a sardine pie, you can use oil from the can instead of soybean oil.
In this way, we can take advantage of the vitamins in the liquid without consuming it “in natura”.
However, if you don't like the taste of this fat, you can invest in sardines preserved in extra virgin olive oil.
Sardines are an excellent protein option, in addition to being super healthy. It is a fish with a large supply of omega-3. This means that its consumption can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and the risk of developing breast cancer by up to 30%.
Fish is also rich in calcium. Studies claim that 60 grams of sardines with their oil contains the equivalent of calcium than a glass of milk.
In addition, the food has generous amounts of vitamins, including B-12, which is essential for the proper functioning of the brain.
