Coast of SP will continue with heavy rains; alert is issued

In recent days, the north coast of São Paulo has suffered from heavy rains. The bad news for residents of this region is that a new cold front should bring more rain. The volumes predicted by the State Government are not close to the 600 millimeters registered over the weekend, but concern the Civil defense. For the city of São Sebastião the forecast is 30 millimeters of precipitation in the next few hours. That municipality was the hardest hit by the rains, with 47 dead as of this morning. In Ubatuba, the forecast is 25 millimeters, as well as Ilhabela and Caraguatatuba.

Luana Gonçalves, Civil Defense Monitoring and Alert coordinator, the alert applies mainly to Baixada Santista, the North Coast and the Paraíba Valley. According to her: “The areas already affected by the rains of the last few days are at risk of new storms”.

According to Sabesp, the water supply in the region, suspended after the rains, has been fully restored.

According to the Government of São Paulo, the soaked soil left unstable areas and new rains, for this reason, there may be new incidents. The Protection Coordinator Civil defenseof São Paulo, Colonel Hengel, stated that:

“Some slope, due to a small volume of water, can give way and cause some degree of abatement”, he said.
