Established by Law n. 9.503/1997, the Brazilian Traffic Code regulates traffic rules in the country. Traffic violations happen when the driver fails to observe the rules provided for in the CTB or in the complementary traffic legislation. Divided into light, medium, serious and very serious, the penalties for infractions are usually fines, suspension of the right to drive or even disqualification.
The value of the fines provided for by the CTB vary according to severity. In this way, there is no fixed price and they range from R$ 88 to R$ 293. However, the very serious fines adopt the multiplier factor, responsible for increasing the value of the fines by up to 60 times.
An example of a very serious infraction is the act of driving under the influence of alcohol or a psychoactive substance that induces dependence, art. 165 of the CTB. The penalty in this case is a fine multiplied by 10 times and suspension of the right to drive for 12 months, in addition to the applicable administrative measures.
Note that the multiplier factor makes the amount of the fine for drinking and driving R$ 2,933.00. Thus, the purpose of the factor is to harden the penalty and prevent the conduct from being committed.
However, the most expensive CTB penalty is not driving after drinking alcohol. Article 253 multiplies the amount of the fine by 60 times in this case: deliberately using a vehicle to disrupt the flow of traffic can result in a loss of approximately BRL 18,000.
But if the person commits the same infraction within a year after the first one, he pays the fine twice, that is, up to R$ 34 thousand. This is important information, although many drivers do not know it, so pay attention to the direction and the amount of the fines so that you are not surprised if you commit any of them.
