1. You need to master assessment skills

Every year, INEP releases a Participant Booklet, which contains information on the skills of essay evaluation, in addition to details on how the correction is carried out and also the criteria that lead to the grade zero.

Altogether there are 5 skills that you need to master:

• Mastering the formal writing of the Portuguese language.
• Understanding the writing proposal and applying concepts from different areas of knowledge for the development of the theme, within the structural limits of the dissertation-argumentative text in prose.
• Select, relate, organize and interpret information, facts, opinions and arguments in defense of a point of view.
• Demonstrate knowledge of the linguistic mechanisms necessary for the construction of arguments.
• Elaborate an intervention proposal for the problem addressed, aiming at respect for human rights.

2. Evaluate exemplary essays

Exemplary essays are those that achieved a score of 1000 in other years, and many of them are in the Participant Booklet, as an example for applying to inspire.

Read the essays carefully, and see their entire construction, the connectors used, how the sociocultural and argumentative repertoires were inserted, and how the intervention proposal was presented.

3. Read news daily and stay up to date on sociocultural ideas

To develop a good essay, you need to have a good critical view of reality, and for that, being up to date with everyday events is fundamental.

To substantiate your used argument, you can use repertoires such as movies, series and books, but it is important that you also update yourself with important news from reliable portals, listen to 'podcasts', among others.

But always relate these repertoires with the theme of writing.

4. practice

You need to practice essay writing. It's no use, if you want to get a good grade, you need to have some writing experience. The ideal is to write at least one essay a week, so that you are already used to the way of writing, the structures and even the time.

Another tip is to time the writing, so that you get used to spending only the time necessary for writing, since there are many questions and time goes by very quickly. Always make a draft and then write it down, as if it were time for the test, and search for previous topics, read the supporting texts to find out about the proposal.

5. Ask a professional for feedback

You need to have your essays corrected to know where you are going wrong, so that you can work on the error and improve your writing. Always ask a professor to correct your essay, read his/her feedback carefully, and try not to make the same mistakes again.
