Research shows that older workers still suffer prejudice in Brazil

With the age change in the country, we are increasingly relying on older workers in the business market. Given this scenario, EY Brasil decided to create a survey, where 191 companies were interviewed, analyzing 13 different sectors. The result found is that most companies (78%) were ageists. One of the best examples is that 80% of the participating companies did not have anti-discrimination policies in the selection process.

In addition to not having policies on the subject in the selection process, 33% of companies do not even have actions focused on the subject. Of the companies that own shares, most of them are aimed at affinity groups and awareness talks.

It is seen that many companies adhere to compulsory retirement, which ends up encouraging the retirement of older employees, to remove the senior presence from the company's environment. And what has the most impact on this data is that most leaders are over 50 years old, but they cannot realize the importance of raising this issue, since 30% say they do not consider it a priority in the company.

Speaking of priority, issues such as inclusion, diversity and equity are not priority strategies for 42% of companies. Of the companies that consider it important to create strategies for minorities, only 45% take the age issue into account, against 75% of the companies that are concerned with the ethnic and gender issue.

Brazil is a country that is aging rapidly, and data show that in 2040 more than half of the workforce will be over 45 years old. It is necessary to look at this issue and create strategies that support this type of worker, since in the future they are the ones who will be available for vacancies.
