In the US, eye drops are suspected of causing death, blindness and loss of eyeballs.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (the American public health agency CDC, in its acronym in English) detected 68 patients in 16 US states with a rare strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. US health officials say eye drops may have caused the death of one person and left several others seriously injured.

In addition to one death, eight patients suffered vision loss and four had to have their eyes removed. This bacteria is resistant to many antibiotics, which can make treating infections more difficult.

According to the CDC, most patients diagnosed with the infection reported using eye drops and artificial tears. Ten different brands have been identified as possibly linked to the outbreak.

After the information, two brands of eye drops manufactured in India and imported into the US were withdrawn from shelves in January and February.

Several vials opened by patients were subjected to testing. The CDC detected the bacteria in the samples. Additionally, unopened vials are being examined in the laboratory to determine if contamination occurred during the manufacturing process.

However, an EzriCare representative said that testing so far has not definitively proven a link between the outbreak and its products.

"To the extent possible, we are reaching out to customers to advise against continued use of the product," a spokesperson said.

Symptoms of the infection include yellow, green, or clear eye discharge, discomfort or pain, redness, blurred vision, and increased sensitivity to light.

According to Statista, a market research firm said that eye drops and eye washes were used by approximately 117 million Americans in 2020.

Treatment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections may include the use of antibiotics, supportive care, and, in severe cases, hospitalization.

The CDC urges anyone who has used recalled products and is now experiencing symptoms to contact a physician.
