Guava

Fruit contains few calories and is rich in pectin, a type of fiber that produces feelings of satiety..

The guava (Psidium guajava) is native to South America, but it was from Brazil that it spread to all countries with a tropical climate. From here it was taken by the Portuguese in the first voyages of the 16th century. Despite this diffusion, we are still one of the largest producers in the world today.

The guava tree is a rustic plant, indicated to help in the recovery of degraded areas because it adapts to any type of soil and also because it attracts a wide variety of fauna. Insects, birds and small mammals cannot resist the smell and taste of the fruit – like humans – and help to pollinate its flowers and spread its seeds, carrying other species of the flora.

[…]

Guava is a well-known and rich source of vitamin C – second only to acerola. But it also has many other less commented nutritional and pharmacological properties. […]

Depending on the region and management conditions, red guava can have, on average, 8.5 mg of lycopene per 100 g, almost three times that of tomatoes. Among the native fruits, in addition to the red guava, we have confirmed only one other great source of lycopene: the ripe pitanga.

It is possible to enjoy the benefits of the fruit even in sweets, juices, jellies and other homemade or industrialized products, as long as there is no excess heating or storage for a long time and with exposure to light.
