Among the 41 species of wild rat of the genus called Akodon, this is the only one that occurs in the Amazon, in an area of canga, vegetation with a high concentration of iron.
Researchers have discovered a species of mammal endemic to the Amazon. This is the Diauarum bush rat (
Of the 41 described species of these rodents, this is the only one that occurs in the Amazon region. Apparently, the rodent is attracted by vegetation known as canga – an ecosystem associated with places where rocks with high concentrations of iron occur.
According to researcher Marcus Vinícius Brandão, these areas are home to very specific living beings adapted to the characteristics of these places.
“One of the places where it was found was in the Carajás National Forest, a conservation area environment located in eastern Pará (PA), where the species was recorded in relative abundance”, affirm.
For him, understanding the ecology of this rodent in the yoke is one of the next challenges. After all, it is a unique ecosystem of plants, adapted to local environmental conditions, including endemic species. “This vegetation covers only 3% of the Carajás National Forest, one of the places where the rodent was found”, he points out.
