1. Disable automatic downloads
Most of us are used to seeing multimedia content already downloaded, but you can set it to download manually and that way you can save storage space.
NOTE: If you turn off Wi-Fi and mobile data downloads, your media files will never download automatically. You will have to click on each file to download it manually.
2. Manage and free up space in storage settings
Another important feature of WhatsApp is that it allows you to easily manage the files and conversations you have. There is a section where you can check the space your chats take up and delete the biggest files.
3. Configure temporary messages
Temporary Messages is an official WhatsApp feature that causes messages to be deleted after a while.
You can activate them from the contact information in the conversations tab. Currently, WhatsApp users also have the option to enable temporary messages on all new conversations. To do so, follow the “Manage storage” settings and go to “Temporary messages”.
Once the feature is enabled, any new one-to-one chats you or someone else create will be set to disappear after a certain period of time automatically, helping you to avoid the accumulation of data.
4. Delete WhatsApp Cache
Your phone's cache saves files that may come in handy in the future, but in most cases they just take up unnecessary space.
The WhatsApp app might be taking up a considerable amount of memory in that section, so you may want to delete it. On Android, you can go to phone settings, search for WhatsApp apps and clear cache.
On iOS, you'll have to backup and uninstall the app, then launch it again and upload the copy so you don't lose your chats.
From Android, you will also see the option to “erase all data”. If you press this option ALL your chats will be deleted so be careful when performing this action.
But, attention: you should only delete the cache if you want to erase all app data.
