How will the Chrome security tool work?

The new tool to verify the security of extensions will act in three situations, when:

  • The extension was not published by the developer;
  • The extension has been removed for violating Chrome Web Store policy;
  • The item has been marked as malware.

In such cases, the extension will be disabled and you will be able to uninstall the program. This new functionality gives users the opportunity to maintain more effective control over the extensions they are using and protect their personal information.

How to use Google's 'Safety Check'?

The new feature will be available in the Google Chrome browser settings, starting with Chrome version 117, as mentioned above.

In this way, just access this area of the browser and click on the “Privacy and security” section.

Then choose the “Review” icon for the system to indicate any malicious extensions installed on your web browser. That way you can remove the extension or get more details about it.

In any case, Google points out that "extensions marked as malware are automatically disabled", just like in older versions of Chrome.
