Archaeological sites in southern Brazil vary in age and meaning. Many of them are related to the indigenous peoples who inhabited the region before the arrival of Europeans.

Researchers from the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (IPHAN) and the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR) are poring over the artifacts found recently.

The sites were located in three distinct zones, close to the banks of the Iguaçu and Paraná rivers. The investigations unearthed a diversity of pieces, including ceramics, arrowheads, tools made from rock fragments and fossils.

These ceramics present a diversity of styles, which points to the presence of different human groups over different time periods.

An intriguing aspect is the variability of decorations present in the ceramics: some exhibit meticulously traced geometric patterns. Others bear images of humans or animals, evoking a variety of cultural symbolism.

Among the finds, the arrowheads also stand out, modeled from stone, with features that vary in size and shape.

This diversification suggests possible variations in the purpose and hunting techniques used by different groups. Furthermore, stone tools reveal the technical skill and adaptability of the ancient inhabitants.
