“Cousin” of the Amazon bird, a species that displays black and blue plumage in areas of the Atlantic Forest.
In the “bunch of keys” color palette, the most varied combinations of black and blue predominate: with 14 centimeters and just over 25 grams, the bird has a blue head with a black spot on the back of the neck and in the region covering the beak.
While the neck, also bluish, the dark tone appears discreet; On the flanks, which are blue in color, the black appears in small, non-uniform spots. On the wings, the black base has a blue stripe.
In addition to the bicolor style, the species draws attention for its vocalization, similar to the noise of keys. Hence the popular name of the bird.
Endemic to Brazil, the cambada-de-chaves occurs only in the coastal Atlantic Forest, where it finds fruits and insects to feed on.
From the tanager family, it is a “cousin” of the banded tanager, typical of the Brazilian Amazon. The similarities are in size, eating habits and the dark spots on the plumage. However, the color palette helps in identifying the birds: yellow, brown and turquoise are characteristics of the tanager.
According to ornithologist Luciano Lima, the relationship between the species corroborates the theory that the two biomes were connected in the past.
During the reproductive period, between spring and summer, the key crow builds its nest in the shape of a small, open cup.
