Tradition spans generations for around 150 years and contributes to valuing and conserving this unique palm tree in South America
Crafts using butiá straw have been passed down from mothers to daughters for around 150 years in the coastal municipality of Torres, in Rio Grande do Sul. Its historical, social, economic and ecological attributes have made the tradition the state's newest intangible cultural heritage.
“Symbolic values such as care, creativity, resilience, women’s autonomy, the power of coexistence and the importance of memory, combined with a unique context, give crafts uniqueness and cultural identity”, describes the NGO Instituto Curicaca in a note sent to ((o))echo.
The civil entity, numerous artisans and the Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage of the State (IPHAE) are the main mobilizers of the recognition, approved today (17) by the government of Rio Grande do Sul. This required two decades of work.
The effort rewards the patient braiding of dry palm tree foliage, forming hats, bags, rugs and other objects. Each piece is unique, with contours imposed by the experienced hands of the artists, forged since childhood.
In addition to providing resources for adults to buy clothes and books, crafts have other functions over time: enriches children's games, cradles teenagers' dreams and is also used as therapy and a source of memories by the elderly.
The proposal that made crafts using butiá straw a Gaucho heritage adds measures to enhance and protect the species, including by the Curicaca Institute, State Secretariat of Culture and City Hall of Torres.
