The reptile plays a crucial role in maintaining waterways and controlling species
Considered one of the smallest crocodilians in the world, the dwarf caiman or caiman paguá (
Paleosuchus palpebrosus) is completely different from its large cousins, with an average height of 150 centimeters in males and 120 centimeters in females. Present in ten countries in South America, it is in Brazil where its largest population is located, divided across all biomes, with the exception of the pampas.Natural from fresh waters, the animal has high resistance to low temperatures, making it common to see it in clean, cold watercourses with large rapids. In the Amazon, it is found mainly in flooded forest areas close to large rivers and lakes. In the Pantanal, where its distribution is restricted to the surroundings of the biome, it is very common in the headwaters of rivers and streams with rocky substrate.
Its varied diet includes fish, crabs, molluscs and terrestrial invertebrates, such as spiders and insects. It can also feed on small mammals, birds, other reptiles and smaller frogs. It is responsible for maintaining balance in the aquatic environment, as it prevents the disordered growth of several species.
Studies show that the reproductive aspects of the dwarf alligator vary from location to location. In the Colombian Amazon, the egg laying period runs from November to March, while in the Brazilian part of the biome, nests have been found in October. Generally, it lays a large number of eggs, exceeding 20 eggs. Protective, females can remain with their offspring until they are 21 months old.
