Brazilian singer Simone Ribeiro (53) says that, after using contact lenses incorrectly, contracted a bacterial infection in October last year. As a result, she ended up losing vision in one of her eyes.
The singer states, in an interview with the newspaper Metrópoles, that she “slept with the lens, spent five months using the same contact lens. It dripped saline solution directly in the eye and didn’t pay attention to the seriousness of any of this.”

Simone further explains that, one day, she woke up and her right eye was green and, over time, it turned white. She realized she was having difficulty seeing and went directly to the hospital.
At the scene, the doctor found that the singer had an ulcer on her cornea, and continued treatment for five months.
There was the possibility of replacing her eye with a prosthesis. However, with treatment, she managed to preserve it but lost her vision.
She claims that she managed to cure the ulcer, but now she is waiting in line for a cornea transplant. The queue to undergo the procedure moves quite slowly.
In addition to this problem, the chance of rejection of the new cornea is high — only 15% of transplant recipients see again, according to information from the Ministry of Health.
Using the object properly is a priority, because, as happened with the singer, misuse can lead to several serious eye problems. Therefore, the recommendation is:
Clean the lenses before and after application;
Respect the manufacturers' usage period — if they are daily, they must be used for 24 hours;
Never sleep with the lenses on;
Clean the storage case;
Choose good solutions for cleaning;
Do not spend many hours with the object in your eyes.
