In the historical timeline, the discovery of writing actually began civilization. Writing, as we know it, appeared systematized around 3500 BC. C., in Mesopotamia.
Before that, humans recorded information on solid surfaces, such as cave walls, in so-called rock art.

Of course, it is necessary to emphasize that all these forms of recording were carried out on solid substrates. After all, there is an inability to write in water, since its nature is liquid.
That's what we believed until recently, before a group of German scientists wrote in fluids for the first time!
When we analyze carefully, we see that there are already examples of writing on non-solid media. For example, planes can accomplish this feat by leaving smoke messages in the sky.
In this context, it is important to note that air has less intense intramolecular forces compared to liquids.
To write in fluids, it is essential that the utensil used is of tiny dimensions, so as not to disturb the fluid and, therefore, avoid the dispersion of the lines.
As messages left by planes go, these aircraft are notably smaller in relation to the wide sky and the letters they form.
However, to write in water, the “pen” would need to be reduced to a practically infinitesimal scale. Now, scientists have developed a sphere with a diameter of approximately 20 to 50 micrometers, a size that does not cause any turbulence in the water.
These tiny spheres operate through an exchange of ions, attracting paint particles as they move, thus leaving their mark along the way.
Through the movement of the container, the scientists were able to perform continuous writing on the liquid substance.

In a container with dimensions comparable to those of a coin, they managed to create a representation that resembled a house, although it was the size of a dot in an “i” character.
Currently, the researchers aim to improve this technique, enabling the creation of lines in a non-continuous manner, by controlling the activation and deactivation of ion exchange.
