Recently, several consumers filed a lawsuit against the company alleging that its products, numbered 0 to 9, caused serious harm, including loss of hair, fragility, baldness in specific areas and scalp irritation. The packages are numbered to indicate the correct order in which the products are used.

Furthermore, dissatisfied consumers stated that Olaplex uses ingredients that can cause allergic reactions and are prohibited in Europe.
They also alleged that the brand made misleading statements about the effectiveness of its products and hid information about potentially harmful chemicals in its formulas.
Olaplex's response was emphatic, assuring that its products do not cause hair loss or damage strands and that they are safe and effective.
Another controversy arose even before concerns about hair damage. Some users of TikTok pointed out that an ingredient in Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector, a repair treatment for dry hair after bleaching, could be linked to infertility. But, is this true?
The ingredient in question is butylphenyl methylpropional, also known as lilial, which was considered toxic for reproduction by the European Commission in 2021.
This classification refers to substances that are potentially harmful to fertility. As a result, lilial has been banned in all cosmetics in the European Union and the United Kingdom from March 1, 2022.
However, it is important to note that lilial was present in many synthetic fragrances used in cosmetics, but in very small quantities. In Olaplex's previous formula, the chemical represented just 0.0119% of the product.
After this determination, the hair care brand decided to change its formula. Not only have they phased out lilial in the UK and EU, but they have also completely removed it from their entire global supply chain.
Olaplex stated: “Medical experts have confirmed that traces of lilial that were used in our No. 3 Hair Perfector for additional fragrance – not as an active or functional ingredient – are not harmful. However, we have stopped producing and distributing lilial-containing products out of respect for any potential concerns our customers may have. Consumer trust is of utmost importance to us.”
Therefore, while the controversies surrounding Olaplex continue to circulate, experts indicate that the brand has taken steps to ensure the security from its products, removing the ingredient associated with infertility and clarifying that its formulas do not cause hair loss.
Consumers can make informed decisions based on these instructions and their own hair care needs.
