The parasite was found in the backyard of a family from Minas Gerais, causing experts to warn about the animal's fatal risks.
The intriguing animal, often mistaken for a simple earthworm, is actually a flatworm, a creature notable for its incredible ability to regenerate. Such an ability means that if it is cut or injured, the worm has the incredible ability to regenerate itself.
Residents of the area have reported surprising experiences, in which when they cut the “hammerhead” in half, the worm continued to move, demonstrating its remarkable resilience. Experts recommend adding salt so that the worm don't react.
Until recently, there were no records of the existence of this worm in Brazilian territory. It was only at the end of September 2023 that Katia Medina, a housewife, made a surprising discovery in her own backyard, in Pedro Leopoldo.
The resident reported that she had never seen anything like it and that several of the same species appeared. The worms caused the resident to lose a family chicken and two cats that were found dead in the same area.
Biologist Fernanda Raggi, in turn, speculates that the arrival of this Indian organism in Pedro Leopoldo could be linked to travelers and researchers.
It suggests that the worm was transported by ships, particularly during periods when the region received visitors, mainly those involved in botanical research and explorers of caves.
