It is common that, when we think about Second World War, our mind quickly turns to the battles that took place in Europe and Asia.
However, Brazil also had its own harrowing chapter in this global history of conflict. The Northeast, in August 1942, suddenly found itself in the spotlight of the war, witnessing devastating events that would change our nation's course in the conflict.

Oily hair: the main myths and truths about this condition
Imagine the normally serene and warm waters of North East Brazilian country transformed into a battlefield. The reason? A menacing German submarine known as U-507, under the command of the experienced Harro Schacht.

In just three days, this submarine launched a relentless attack on Brazil, torpedoing seven of its merchant ships.
On August 15, the ship Baependi, which normally had peaceful voyages, was brutally attacked while sailing off the coast of Sergipe. Of the 306 passengers, surprisingly, only 36 survived, leaving 270 lives lost.

The stories of despair and anguish shared by survivors over the years serve as chilling reminders of the horrors of war.
But the tragedy did not stop there. Shortly after the sinking of the Baependi, the U-507 advanced against the ship Araraquara, which was sailing along the same coast of Sergipe. The result was the death of 131 of the 140 passengers.
The attacks continued, with ships such as the Aníbal Benévolo, the Itagiba, the Jacira and the Arará sharing similar fates, leading to a staggering loss of 607 lives.
Every story has its climax, and for U-507, its reign of terror was coming to an end. In January 1943, still lurking in Brazilian waters near Piauí, the Nazi vessel met its fate.
A plane from American air Force attacked the submarine, effectively destroying it. Brazil was finally free of the U-507 threat.
Today, the remains of this Nazi ship rest at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, serving as a silent testimony to the events of those fateful days.

It is essential to keep this memory alive, not just in honor of the victims, but as a powerful reminder. War, with all its horrors, must never be forgotten.
By remembering, we honor those who lost their lives and reaffirm our commitment to peace. Let us ensure that events like this remain in the annals of history never to be repeated.
