The debut conference, held last Wednesday night (18), in São Paulo, celebrated the efforts of the UFMG team.
The research coordinator, Professor Frederico Garcia, from the Department of Psychiatry at the Faculty of Medicine, expressed his gratitude to Brazilian society for supporting the campaign.
He highlighted that conducting scientific research in Latin America is a challenge and emphasized the differentiated role of UFMG in this context.
He thanked the Dean Sandra Regina Goulart Almeida and the Dean of Research Fernando Reis for the support that made this achievement possible.
One of the innovative features of the Calixcoca vaccine is the adoption of a synthetic molecule as the basis for its development.
In contrast to conventional vaccines, which are generally based on protein platforms such as proteins from viruses or bacteria, this innovative approach represents a significant advance in research vaccination.
The Calixcoca vaccine, developed by the UFMG team, gained recognition from doctors in 17 countries, surpassing 11 other innovative initiatives in the field of health in Latin America.
Among the competitors, SpiN-Tec stands out, a vaccine against covid-19, also from UFMG, and a herbal medicine to treat diabetes mellitus and obesity, developed at the University of Uberaba (Uniube).
These studies stood out as finalists and were awarded prizes of 50 thousand euros each. It is worth mentioning that all three researches had the support of the Government of Minas Gerais, through the Minas Gerais State Research Support Foundation (Fapemig), for their development.
Furthermore, the Calixcoca vaccine received funding from the Federal Government and words of amendment parliamentarians, highlighting the government's commitment to scientific advancement and research in the area of health.
