Enable the advancement of quantum technologies in Brazil. This is the main objective of the partnership signed last Tuesday (17), between MCTI (Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation) and Embrapii (Brazilian Innovation Company) to create the Embrapii Competence Center in Technologies Quantum.
Led by Senai Cimatec in Salvador (BA), the initiative – which aims to develop research and development of quantum technologies – foresees investments of R$ 60 million, coming from the IoT Priority Program – manufacturing 4.0, from MCTI, within the scope of the IT Law (L0ei de ICTs).

The new area of knowledge – which aims to help society find solutions to highly complex problems, through new forms of computing, communication and sensors – has applications in new sources of clean energy, monitoring climate changes on the planet, developing new vaccines more quickly and accurately, as well as security in communication of data.
“Senai Cimatec will be a reference space in Brazil to work in the area of quantum technologies. Countries need to invest and have knowledge in this area so as not to miss opportunities and also due to the issue of data security”, stated the Secretary of Technological Development and Innovation of the MCTI, highlighted Guila, when participating in the ceremony announcing the Center for Competence. On the occasion, she commented that quantum technologies “have enormous potential to change the way companies work”.
With a duration of 42 months, the contract with Senai Cimatec provides for research and development activities in quantum technologies, as well as HR training and qualification for RD&I activities (Research, Development and Innovation), not to mention the creation of an open innovation environment for the creation and attraction of startups, involving national and international partnerships and companies associated. The central ideal here is to develop research that meets market needs, in order to insert Brazil into the international scenario of R&D activities associated with quantum technologies.
In the assessment of the president of Embrapii, Chico Saboya, “we need convergence between public policies and the private sector for the former to enable an environment of innovation and the second having incentives to increase the appetite for innovation”, for whom the Embrapii competence centers are intended “to unite these ends and seek solutions in different areas”.
The general director of Senai Cimatec, Leone Andrade, understands that “this will be a big step towards Brazil's consolidation in the global race for quantum technologies. From the Competence Center it will be possible to increase the quality and number of talents that will be a fundamental basis for developing projects and connecting with new startups and companies.” He concludes that the new center will emphasize Quantum Communication, through new protocols and key distribution experiments, and Quantum Computing with new algorithms and systems hardware.
The selection of Senai Cimatec aligns with Embrapii's premise of decentralizing innovation in the country, by enabling investments in research centers across the country. Located in the capital of Bahia, the Integrated Manufacturing and Technology Campus – Senai Cimatec is considered one of the most advanced national centers for education, technology and innovation.
