In 2022, the cities of Bauru, Botucatu and Lençóis Paulista, located in São Paulo, were identified as places with pesticides in the water distributed to the population.
Such information was revealed in a study released by the Non-Governmental Organization Repórter Brasil, based on data provided by Ministry of Health.

The survey showed that these three cities appear on the list of 210 Brazilian municipalities that showed contamination by pesticides in drinking water destined for their respective populations.
Interestingly, as well as in the capitals São Paulo and Fortaleza, these places recorded the highest number of types of pesticides detected in the water, totaling 27 in each city.
The phenomenon known as the “cocktail effect” involves the mixing of substances and has generated concern among experts, since such a combination can pose risks to the health of those who ingest the water contaminated.
However, it is important to highlight that the tests carried out previously identified that the concentrations of substances in the water were within the limits considered safe by the Ministry of Health, when analyzed in isolation.
In Bauru, the largest city in the center-west of São Paulo, the water supply system is operated by the Department of Water and Sewage (DAE), a municipal authority.
In Lençóis Paulista, the responsibility lies with the Autonomous Water and Sewage Service (SAAE). In Botucatu, in turn, water distribution is the responsibility of the Basic Sanitation Company of the State of São Paulo (Sabesp).

These discoveries occurred in water samples collected from various supply networks in São Paulo municipalities.
It is important to highlight that the mere presence of each pesticide in a sample alone does not necessarily imply health risks.
However, the Brazilian regulatory framework does not take into account the potential dangers associated with the interaction between different types of pesticides.
It is precisely this combination of substances that has generated concern among experts and drawn attention to the possible impacts on public health.
