A story of tragic love, with a striking similarity to the narrative of William Shakespeare's “Romeo and Juliet”, took place three millennia ago near the village of Petrykiv, in Ukraine.
There, archaeologists discovered a grave that contained the remains of a couple buried together and hugging, which suggests an eternal union.

It is speculated that the woman voluntarily ingested poison to unite with her lover in eternity, and was buried alive after consuming the fatal substance.
The heartbreaking discovery was shared in a video on the Instagram account @history_mae on September 26, attracting more than 4.4 million views and more than 3,100 comments to date.
The remarkable burial was one of several investigated by specialist Mykola Bandrivsky, from the Service Archaeological Rescue of the Institute of Archeology of Ukraine, as part of its study of couples' graves in love.
The results of the discovery were originally published in Funeral Director Monthly magazine in 2019. The couple belongs to the ancient Vysotskaya culture, also known as Wysocko.
Bandrivsky described this revelation as a unique burial, in which a man and a woman stood side by side, embracing with great affection.
The couple's faces were turned towards each other, with their foreheads in contact. The woman was lying on her side and facing her lover, lovingly hugging him.

The couple, in addition to their position of eternal love, was also adorned with bronze pieces. Near the heads, archaeologists found several ceramic objects, including a bowl, a jug and three other items, as described by the researcher.
The culture they were part of was known for its burial practices marked by “tenderness”. In some cases, burials revealed a man holding a woman's hands, his lips touching her forehead, and their arms intertwined in a final embrace.
The story of this couple turned out to be especially dramatic. Bandrivsky suggests that the decision of the woman of consuming poison and burying herself alive may have been dictated by her deep desire to remain with her loved one, seeking an easy and painless union.
