This may include editing images to add or remove elements, such as people, objects or context, in a way that distorts reality.
In view of this, the Google launched a tool to combat the spread of false images and misinformation in search results.
Called “About this image”, this innovative function provides users with crucial information about the figures found on the web, allowing users to check whether a photo has been manipulated or created using Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The announcement of this tool took place during the company's annual conference, Google I/O 2023, in May, and is now being gradually implemented.
However, it is important to highlight that, for now, this functionality is only available in English, with no confirmed date for its launch in the Brazilian version of the search engine.
To access the information provided by “About this image”, users need to select a photo in the search results and then click on the three options dots found in the bar higher.

Once this is done, simply choose the “About this image” option to access a history that shows the other places where the image was published on the internet.
The page will display a timeline, indicating the last pages the image was used online, along with a rough estimate of the date it was first indexed in the engine's records search.
This tool was developed with the aim of showing the origin of the image within the platform, including its metadata, whenever available.
This allows you to contextualize the image and inform the user about how it was used or described in various websites, such as news portals, helping to identify false claims associated with image.
In general, the function is similar to an existing feature called “About this result”, which is applied to text search results.
The “About this image” tool is only available in Google search results, not yet in Google Lens. However, availability in other countries, including Brazil, does not yet have a defined date.
Finally, other ways to access are in development and will be launched in the coming months.
