NAME:

Read:

coastal mulungu (Erythrina speciosa)

Flowering between June and September, the coastal mulungu is a species that fills cities with charm during the coldest days of the year. Like ipês, this plant is completely devoid of leaves during flowering. It has reddish flowers, like other species of the genus Erythrina, popularly known as mulungus.

Derived from Greek erythros, the name “erythrina” means red, alluding to the color of its flowers. In Brazil, there are around 12 species in the group, with the coastal mulungu being native to the southeast and south regions. The tree with a thorny stem, whose height varies between two and four meters, is typical of the Atlantic Forest and can be found in the Cerrado.

Common in coastal areas, the coastal mulungu thrives in humid soils and has an excellent landscaping effect. It naturally attracts hummingbirds, tanagers and a wide variety of birds. The peculiar shape of its inflorescences means it is also known as erythrina-candelabra.
