Tree from the “Fabaceae” family occurs from Mexico to Rio Grande do Sul and has two varieties.
The largest family in terms of number of species in Brazilian flora is the Fabaceae (for a long time called Leguminosae). It has around 3 thousand species registered in Brazil. Among them are ground plants such as peanuts – yes, peanuts are a native species of our country –, shrubs such as caliandra, vines such as cuitelinho and many trees, such as guapuruvu.
Guapuruvu occurs from Mexico to Rio Grande do Sul, being divided into two varieties, one exclusive to the Atlantic Forest and the other present from Mexico to the Amazon.
Imposing, it can exceed 30 meters in height, attracting a lot of attention due to its straight trunk and large crown, which at flowering time is covered with infinite yellow flowers. Despite its size, the guapuruvu has a relatively low longevity, between 50 and 70 years. Which means that it grows very quickly, having been identified as one of the fastest growing native trees in Brazil, being able to grow up to three meters per year.
Its rapid growth means that its wood is not very dense and very light, which prevents its use in occasions that require resistance. On the other hand, guapuruvu is highly desired for the construction of the famous “one stick” canoes, vessels built using a technique in which the canoe is sculpted from a single log.
