ALERT Report: Gas Stoves Linked to Childhood Asthma

The report revealed that gas stoves are releasing pollutants linked to childhood asthma into homes across Europe.

Scientists in the Netherlands conducted air quality measurements in 247 homes, finding that average nitrogen dioxide levels (NO2) were almost double in homes with gas cooking compared to those using gas processing methods electric.

Surprisingly, a quarter of homes with gas stoves exceeded established pollution limits by the World Health Organization, while none of the homes with electric stoves exceeded these Limits.

These findings highlight concerns about potential health risks associated with the widespread use of gas stoves.

Piet Jacobs, a scientist affiliated with the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research, emphasizes that the transition to electrical methods, preferably with the use of preventive ventilation exhaust fans, it can reduce toxin levels below recommendations imposed.

Burning gas during cooking releases polluting substances such as nitrogen dioxide (NO2), which can harm the lungs and inflame the airways.

Discovery

The research, conducted at the request of energy efficiency group Clasp, assessed indoor nitrogen dioxide (NO2) levels in seven European nations.

The selection of residences requires the absence of consumers and distance from polluting sources, such as busy roads and factories, to minimize the impact of other sources of pollution.

The results revealed that pollution episodes can persist for several hours, intensifying with the duration of rest time.

On average, the daily limit established by the World Health Organization (WHO) for NO2 pollution was exceeded for 3.25 days in the 13-day assessment period.

Although the association between gas stoves and childhood asthma has long been recognized, a direct causal link between the two has not yet been established.
