Red ALERT for heat wave is extended; see how long it goes
The phenomenon was expected to end this Wednesday (15th), however, Inmet extended the alert until Friday (17th). However, the heat will still appear again in Brazil until the end of the year. The climate forecast is that minimum and maximum temperatures will remain above average in most of the country until the beginning of 2024.
“Summer begins on December 22nd and, as it is the hottest season, the heat tends to persist until at least January 2024. Of course, there will be rain and, when they occur, there will be a reduction in the muggy conditions”, explained Andrea Ramos, meteorologist at Inmet.
O El Niño It is constantly associated with rising global temperatures and the intensification of climate events. According to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), El Niño has a 62% chance of continuing until June 2024, which means it will remain in the Brazilian summer and autumn.
“El Niño will cause heat that persists in the central part of the country, with heavy rainfall irregularities in the South and dry and hot weather in the North”, explained Andrea Ramos. Furthermore, the meteorologist also explains that the phenomenon reached its peak in October, which will persist until February. Therefore, it will only begin to lose strength in April, through a gradual reduction in its activities.
“Between April, May and June, there is an influence of La Niña, which opposes El Niño. It softens it and temperatures tend not to be as high. For example, last year, we were under your control and we even had a record number of cold in Brasília, with 1.4°C. We have to pay attention to all the changes, but the greatest possibility of temperature neutrality is mid-June”, concludes the meteorologist.
