For many Brazilians, retirement represents a well-deserved rest after years of work. However, for those who were unable to contribute regularly to the National Social Security Institute (INSS), this objective may seem distant.
The good news is that, even without contributions, some citizens can still retire. Specifically, people over 65 and those with disabilities may be eligible for benefits without having made social security contributions.

The INSS offers a program called Continuous Payment Benefit (BPC). This is not a conventional retirement, but rather an aid.
It allocates a monthly minimum wage to the elderly and people with disabilities (PWD) who do not have the means to support themselves. To be eligible, the applicant's per capita monthly family income must be equal to or less than a quarter of the minimum wage.
The criteria for receiving the BPC change annually, following the adjustment of the minimum wage. Currently, with a minimum wage of R$1,320, per capita family income should not exceed R$330.00.
Furthermore, the applicant must be registered in the Single Registry (CadÚnico), which considers several factors, including the family vulnerability, the provision of community services, economic condition, age, history of disability and potential of work.
The first step to requesting the BPC is to register with CadÚnico. This can be done by any family member, not just the future beneficiary.
It is necessary to go to a Social Assistance Reference Center (CRAS) with CPF, photo ID, voter registration card or work card for all residents of the same residence. Documents such as proof of address and school registration are useful, but not mandatory.
After registration, the BPC request can be made via the Meu INSS website or application. The process includes:
The INSS will verify the CadÚnico information and, if necessary, request additional evidence. People with disabilities may need social and medical assessment. The BPC can also be requested by calling 135.
This type of retirement, without regular contributions to the INSS through the BPC, represents an important alternative for the elderly and people with disabilities who face financial difficulties.
