El Niño could make 2023 the hottest year in 125,000 years in Brazil

The phenomenon El Niño is poised to cause major climate change in Brazil in 2023. Experts predict that December will mark the peak of El Niño, bringing more severe weather conditions in several regions of the country.

During a recent event, Brazilian climatologists discussed the expected and observed impacts of El Niño in Brazil.

Alarming predictions for the year

Climatologists warn that 2023 could be the hottest year in 125,000 years, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). El Niño is expected to intensify the drought in the Amazon and the Northeast, raise temperatures in the Center-West and Southeast, and increase rainfall in the South. These effects are expected to become more severe by early 2024.

Influence of climate change

Experts note that Brazil is experiencing typical summer weather extremes during El Niño, a clear indication of climate change in action.

José Marengo, from Cemaden, points out that climate change, combined with the warming of the North Atlantic, is distorting the climate in Brazil, influencing conditions in the Amazon and the Northeast.

Understanding El Niño

El Niño is a climate phenomenon characterized by the abnormal warming of the waters of the Equatorial Pacific for at least six months. This warming influences the formation of rain, wind circulation and global temperatures.

Consequences of El Niño in Brazil

Brazilian regions are affected in different ways by El Niño. While the North region faces varying droughts, the Northeast experiences droughts of different intensities.

In the Southeast, the phenomenon increases average temperatures, especially in summer and winter. In the Central-West and South, El Niño causes above-average rainfall, in addition to higher temperatures in the Central-West.

Many challenges ahead

El Niño in 2023 will bring significant challenges to Brazil, with varying impacts on different regions. The warming of the North Atlantic and global climate change contribute to worsening these effects.

Understanding and preparing for these changes are essential to minimize their impacts on the population and the environment.
