Married men face a drop in testosterone levels, study indicates

Recently, research published in the scientific journal Annals of Internal Medicine brought to light an intriguing discovery: men who are married have lower average levels of testosterone compared to those who remain single.

This investigation suggests that marriage may be associated with a decline in testosterone levels, a hormone essentially linked to severalmale functions, such as energy, sexual desire and muscle mass.

The data found points to a clear trend: married men tend to have a lower average oftestosterone compared to their single counterparts.

A group of researchers from the University of Western Australia undertook a comprehensive investigation, which encompassed 11 studies involving more than 25,000 men, all carried out before 2020.

The undertaking exclusively involved calculating testosterone levels over time, using a mass spectrometry technique.

In a subsequent stage of the research, the scientists chose to direct their analysis beyond the age, exploring lifestyle factors that could affect health levels testosterone.

Among these elements, the dynamics between marital status, that is, being married or single, emerged as a focus of interest.

Married men can have testosterone affected

It has been found that those who are married or involved in relationships have lower average testosterone levels compared to those who remain single.

Although the exact mechanisms underlying this association are still under investigation, evidence points to a possible interconnection between relational dynamics and hormonal physiology.

The researchers considered that this variation could reflect the weight of stress associated with family life, including the presence of children in the home environment.

They hypothesize that family life dynamics and parental responsibilities may contribute to this observed pattern.

Previous investigations have also indicated that the stress may influence the reduction of testosterone production in men.

Is there a way to combat this?

In addition to the relationship and testosterone levels, researchers have also made important discoveries regarding men's lifestyle.

It has been observed that those who engage in vigorous physical activity for less than 75 minutes per week have, on average, lower testosterone levels compared to older men active.
