Born in the interior of São Paulo, in the city of São Luiz do Paraitinga, and trained in Rio de Janeiro, the young doctor went to Paris and specialized in Microbiology at the Pasteur Institute. In 1899, back in the country, he was invited to participate in a medical commission alongside Vital Brazil and Adolfo Lutz. The objective was to confirm the arrival of bubonic plague in Brazil through the port of Santos.
Based on this discovery, it was necessary to create an institute for the production of anti-plague serum in the country's capital – at the time, the city of Rio de Janeiro. And there Oswaldo Cruz went, this time, at the invitation of Baron Pedro Afonso, to act as technical director at the new institution. Two years later, with the baron's departure, Oswaldo took over as general director.

She had, in fact, a curious personality and attentive to every opportunity. Throughout her life, she knew how to promote her and her team's work. In 1907, the Institute received first prize at the Hygiene and Demographic Exhibition in Berlin, due to its scientific work and collection of pathological anatomy specimens. A year later, in 1908, it became the Institute of Experimental Pathology, renamed Instituto Oswaldo Cruz.
