Indigenous writer and activist Ailton Krenak is the new Immortal of the Brazilian Academy of Letters. He occupies seat number 5, which belonged to José Murilo de Carvalho, who died in August this year.
The historian Mári Del Priore and the also indigenous writer, Daniel Mun-Du-Ru-Ku, disputed with Krenak. The indigenous writer and environmental activist was elected with 23 votes.
The inauguration date has not yet been defined by the Academy's new Immortal. Ailton Krenak was born in 1953, in the Vale do Rio Doce region, Minas Gerais, territory of the Krenak people, a place affected by mineral extraction activities.
Krenak is an activist in the socio-environmental movement and in defense of indigenous rights. He is a commander of the Order of Cultural Merit of the Presidency of the Republic and an honorary doctorate from the Federal University of Minas Gerais and the Federal University of Juiz de Fora.
He organized the Alliance of Forest Peoples, which brings together riverside and indigenous communities in the Amazon, and contributed to the creation of the Union of Indigenous Nations.
He is co-author of the proposal from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO, which created the Serra do Espinhaço biosphere reserve in 2005, and is a member of its management committee.
He was decisive in achieving the “Indian Chapter”, chapter 8 in the 1988 Constitution, which began to guarantee, in written form, indigenous rights to culture and land.
Among Krenak’s most recent books are “Ideas to postpone the end of the world”, from 2019, “Life is not useful”, from 2020, “Places of origin”, from 2021, written together with Yussef Campos, and the book “Futuro ancestral”, by 2022.
