Rio Negro reaches its lowest level in history

The trend is for volume to continue decreasing until the end of October

The Rio Negro reached this Monday (16) the level of 13.59 meters, the lowest ever recorded in history, in 121 years of reading by the port of Manaus.

According to the Management of Forwarding and Monitoring of the City of Manaus, which has been monitoring of the ebb of the Negro and Amazon rivers, the tendency is for the volume of the rivers to continue decreasing until the end of this month.

The drought has already affected 63 rural riverside communities in Manaus. At the end of September, City Hall declared an emergency situation in the municipality, due to the low tide of the Rio Negro.

The school year for riverside schools located in this region ended early due to the drought, as teachers and students found it difficult to get to school units.

According to the National Amazon Research Institute (Inpa”), in addition to the El Niño phenomenon, which increases the temperature of the ocean's surface waters in the region of the Equatorial Pacific, the warming of the North Tropical Atlantic, just above the Equator, inhibits the formation of clouds, reducing the volume of rainfall in the Equatorial Pacific. Amazon.
