ENGLISH ACTIVITIES FOR KINDERGARTEN

Kindergarten students are not yet prepared for formal studies in grammar and the English language. However, these students can learn basic vocabulary and conversational etiquette through games and activities, without having to learn technical processes and grammar rules. They need to be constantly motivated. Using games, music and fun reading activities can help children develop the four basic communication skills: reading, speaking, listening and writing. Below we have selected some English activities for Kindergarten.

1 - SIMONS SAYS (THE MASTER TOLD)
Teach your students how to play “Simon Says” with a change. The teacher should play the role of “Simon” or choose a student for that position. Use the word “please” in place of “Simon says”. This activity will teach students the use of the word “please” and demonstrate politeness and listening skills. For example, if “Simon” says “Jump, please”, the student must jump. However, if “Simon” says “Jump”, the students should stand still because he didn't say “please”.

2 – PHONE
This activity will help students develop basic listening skills and the concept of conveying information to one another. Arrange students in a complete circle, and sit with them. Turn to the student on your right and speak a simple sentence in English very softly. This student then turns to his right and does the same with the student on his side. The process continues through the circle until it comes back to you. Repeat the phrase you heard and explain to students how phrases can be misinterpreted and misunderstood when passed from person to person.

3 – CATEGORY LABEL
This is an activity that can be done outdoors to teach vocabulary associated with certain categories. Choose a category like food, transportation or sports. Assign a “label” to follow students around the room. When a student is tagged, he or she must name the object or word associated with the given category within a certain amount of time. If he doesn't make it, he must sit down until the next round. If he succeeds, he becomes the “labeller”. The last person to leave the game is the winner.

4 - KARUTA
Play Karuta in a large, open place, as students are required to connect pictures and words. Scatter picture cards on one side of the room. Organize students into four or five groups and instruct them to stand side by side facing the cards. Say a word that matches a picture aloud and let the row of students run to see who can find the picture that matches the word. The first one to find the correct figure gets one point. Students go to the end of the row and it's time for another group to join.

5 – FOLLOW THE LEADER
Use this game when teaching action verbs. Determine a leader or become the leader yourself. Instruct students to walk behind the leader as he walks through the classroom. The leader takes an action and shouts out the action as he does it. Everyone in the queue must repeat the action. Use simple phrases like jumping, waving, jumping, crawling, sitting or standing.
