Two new species of lizard were discovered in the Brazilian cerrado. baptized of Stenocercus quinarius and Stenocercus squarrosus, they were found, respectively, in the Grande Sertão Veredas National Park, between Minas Gerais and Bahia, and in the Serra das Confusãos National Park, Piauí.
The discovery shows how little biodiversity in this region is known. “Brazil still needs a great effort to catalog its biodiversity. In the cerrado, due to the intense pace of degradation, actions like this are even more urgent”, says Cristiano Nogueira, a biologist at the non-profit organization. governmental Conservation International and coordinator of an inventory of the Squamata reptile fauna (lizards, snakes and amphibians or two-headed snakes) from the cerrado. “Very little was known about these reptiles. There is still a lot to be studied and published, but we have already been able to demonstrate that endemism and diversity in the cerrado is much greater than previously thought”, says Nogueira […]
During field expeditions, which involved 10 locations in central Brazil, at least 15 other species unknown to science, some already in the science stage, some already in the description. Other new species were contained in the herpetological collections examined by the researcher and made up material obtained from previous samplings in the cerrado. “The zoological collections of the Butantan Institute, the USP Zoology Museum and the University of Brasília (UnB) provided fundamental data, indispensable to the project. They are like libraries of our fauna”, says the researcher. The work of classifying these animals will continue throughout the year and counts on the collaboration of specialists from USP and UnB. This basic information on the composition of the fauna is fundamental for us to be able to devise good conservation strategies, in one of the richest and most threatened regions on the planet”, concludes Nogueira.
