Jupiter resolved, it was said, to elect a sovereign from among the birds, and made it known that, on a certain day, all together must come to his presence. On that day, he would personally choose the most beautiful among them all, to be proclaimed king of birds.
A Magpie, knowing his own ugliness, went looking in the fields and forests for the feathers that had fallen from the wings of the other birds, and putting them all together, glued them over his plumage.
When the appointed day arrived, and the birds presented themselves before Jupiter, the Jaw paraded with her elegant and exuberant plumage, as if she were a graceful and beautiful Pheasant.
As Jupiter intended to make her the king of birds on account of the beauty of her plumage, the other birds, indignant, protested, and each snatched the feather that belonged to him. And so the Rook was again, just a simple common Rook…
Moral of the story: Appearances can only be deceiving up to a certain point, with a clean face we are just ourselves…
