Low, thorny trees, scorching heat and almost always dry weather. Did you think about the northeastern hinterland? Right! But the Brazilian northeast is so rich that its landscapes may surprise us. Some mountain regions, for example, are as humid and fresh as those in the south and southeast of Brazil. These regions are called “brejos-de-altitude” and constitute very special areas for the conservation of biodiversity.
Thousands of years ago, the Northeast was much wetter and, contrary to what we normally observe today, there was an extensive tropical forest there, where the Atlantic Forest and the Amazon meet. As the climate in the region became drier, these forests were restricted to some mountainous regions. Therefore, the swamps-de-altitude are considered true relics of nature.
