Nine years after interrupting its circulation, the newspaper “Vossa Senhoria”, from Divinópolis (MG), is again published and will be relaunched on August 20 at the city's Literary Festival, 103 km away from Belo Horizonte, when the periodical would complete 81 years old.
The publication which is 2.5 centimeters by 3.5 centimeters in size, 200 characters (with space) on each of the 26 pages (four of them in English), and these characters with body (size) 6, was recognized in 2000 by the Book of Records as the smallest newspaper in the world.
“Since the newspaper's closing in 2007, two more publications have appeared that are currently smaller: one in India and one in England. But in the three Americas, 'Vossa Senhoria' is still the smallest newspaper”, says writer and journalist Leida Reis, who will be responsible for editing the publication.
Created in 1935 by journalist and graphic artist Leônidas Schwindt (1906-1972), in Goiás (GO), “Vossa Senhoria” was later published in Abaeté (MG), Pitangui (MG) and Belo Horizonte. A critic of the regime, the newspaper was fighting the Getúlio Vargas government (1882-1954), which ended up resulting in the arrest of its founder in 1955. A year later, in 1956, it stopped circulating.
Thus, after a period of three decades, Dolores Schwindt, the journalist's daughter, resumed publication in 1985, this time in the municipality of Minas Gerais and directed it until her death nine years ago.
Between 1935 and 1956, with strong political content, the publication had the size of 9 centimeters by 6 centimeters, later changing to 10 centimeters by 7 centimeters.
Between 1985 and 2007, with lighter texts, the newspaper published poems by Adélia Prado and brought local news. During the period, the size of the publication was being reduced to a format of 2.5 centimeters by 3.5 centimeters, which the was recognized by Guinness as the smallest newspaper in the world, in 2000, and which will be maintained in this third phase of the Publication.
After this period, until the beginning of the 2010s, Dulce Schwindt, another daughter of the founder, kept only sporadic publications of the newspaper.
