The abolition of slavery in Brazil, granted on May 13, 1888, by the Golden Law, contrary to what many people think, was not just an official act, removed from the people. The end of slavery was a fact expected not only by slaves, but by many other people who disagreed with the large planters, who wanted to keep their slave quarters crammed with slaves. But abolitionist propaganda was stronger. Enslaved people also did their part. The news of great escapes and riots appeared in the press and frightened everyone. Therefore, in 1888, it was no longer possible to wait: an end to slavery now!
