NAME:

war foot

Zezinho would like toy soldiers to have life. Fight. I would, yes. Until one day, in the backyard, after digging small trenches, as he had seen in the neighborhood cinema, he arranged them in combat position. The cannons stayed behind.

The imagination worked, violent. The enemy troops, in front of his small army, were violently defeated in a short time. But his victory brought him immense sadness. How to fix broken enemies? Zezinho felt he could destroy: but he was very sad. That day he didn't even eat the dinner his mother had prepared.

-Just a little.

- I do not want.

– Why, boy?

– Mom… I killed people today. A lot of soldiers.

- What?

– Legless soldiers. Without head. No arm. It was horrible. I want to cry.

– What nonsense is this?

– Mom… Do you buy that ambulance at Onofre's sale? The one with the red cross?

- For what?

– To take care of them. I'll make matchsticks.

Zezinho had a fever. They called the doctor. Nobody understood. But the war continued in the boy's fever.

- Advance! First cannon, fire! The warlike madness continued.(…) The doctor said:

- I do not understand. Did he eat something on the street?

– No doctor. Played all day in the yard. It was examined from head to toe. Nothing.

– I'll prescribe soothing. He is very agitated. I really don't understand.

The next day, Zezinho decided to bury his dead. Generals and soldiers. Side by side. Maneco jumped over the fence and asked what it was.

- Nothing.

– And this thing there, with the little flag?

– Nothing, go away! Already said.

Maneco went. He's got some enemy survivors. I was angry. Without sorrow. He's packed his army. Few existed on the other side. But they were enemies.

(…) The devastation was general. He checked: nothing was left. Look, then, at your troops. He had lost track of things: he had destroyed his own army. There was nothing left of the toys. He marched alone across the square of earth, bounded by the bamboo fences. With the bugle, a gift from Uncle Anselmo, he tried to make some sounds. Hoarse plastic horn. He picked up rocks and started throwing. Broken windows. Only then did he remember that his parents fought day and night. They argued. Once, the father beat the mother. He tried to help her, but was thrown against the potholed wall. It bled.

They fought a lot. Especially when the father arrived drunk.

The toy soldiers were bought with the mother's savings: she sewed them out.

He arrived home and picked up the empty shoebox. He unearthed the mutilated buried. In the pool, he washed them with love: legs, arms, heads.

He resurrected them in his imagination. He packed them in the box and threw away the weapons. He regretted that useless war, trying to repair the damage. In that instant, he felt happy: there was peace.
