Occupying almost 10% of the national territory, with 736,833 km², the Caatinga covers the states of Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Sergipe, Alagoas, Bahia, south and east of Piauí and north of Minas General.
A region with a semiarid climate and shallow and rocky soil, although relatively fertile, the biome is rich in genetic resources due to its high biodiversity. The aggressive aspect of the vegetation contrasts with the diversified color of the flowers that emerge during the rainy season, whose rainfall varies between 300 and 800 millimeters annually.
The Caatinga has three strata: arboreal (8 to 12 meters), shrub (2 to 5 meters) and herbaceous (below 2 meters). The vegetation has adapted to the dry climate to protect itself. The leaves, for example, are thin or nonexistent. Some plants, like cacti, store water, others are characterized by having roots practically in the soil surface to absorb the maximum amount of rain. […]
In the midst of so much aridity, the Caatinga surprises with its “humidity islands” and fertile soils. These are called swamps, which break the monotony of the physical and geological conditions of the hinterlands. On these islands, it is possible to produce almost all the foods and fruits peculiar to the tropics of the world. These areas are usually located close to the mountains, where the abundance of rain is greater.

When it rains at the beginning of the year, the landscape changes very quickly. The trees are covered with leaves and the soil is covered with small plants. The fauna is getting fat again. In the Caatinga lives the blue macaw, which is threatened with extinction. The last specimen of the species living in the wild has not been seen since the end of 2000. Other animals in the region are the cane toad, white wing, agouti, opossum, cavy, brocket deer, armadillo and the north-eastern marmoset, among others.
About 20 million Brazilians live in the region covered by the Caatinga, in an area of almost 800 thousand km². When it doesn't rain, the man from the sertão and his family have to walk kilometers in search of water from the dams. The climatic irregularity is one of the factors that most interferes in the life of the sertanejo.
