Estrada União e Indústria, which joins RankBrasil, was the first paved highway in the country, inaugurated on June 23, 1861 by the then Emperor Dom Pedro II.
The record-breaking stretch connects Petrópolis – RJ to Juiz de Fora – MG. Built with the labor of German settlers, the highway was paved using the macadam method – a floor made up of small stones, compressed so that they fit together.
At the time, the road was of great importance for the flow of coffee production in the region, representing a great advance in engineering technique in Brazil, as it integrated and united the states of Rio de Janeiro and Minas General.
