Chilean President Sebastián Piñera signed a law banning the distribution of bags plastics in commerce across the country, which becomes the first in South America to adopt this type of measure. The aim is to protect its great coastline from pollution. The country, bathed by the Pacific Ocean, has more than 6,000 kilometers of coastline.
Supermarkets, pharmacies and other stores will have six months to adapt. Until January, these establishments will be able to supply a maximum of two bags per consumer for each purchase. After that, the ban will be total on big commerce. Only small grocery stores and neighborhood businesses will have two years to comply with the law.
Anyone who breaks the new rule will have to pay a fine of 370 dollars (the equivalent of 1,480 reais) per plastic bag delivered.
villains of the environment
According to the Chilean government, 3.2 billion plastic bags are produced in the country each year. With the law, Chile is among about 60 countries that have taken steps to reduce plastic in their territories.
Worldwide, 10 million bags are consumed per minute. Each takes over 400 years to completely dissolve in nature.
Considered as great environmental villains, 90% of plastic bags end up in dumps or in the sea, where they are consumed by birds and fish. According to the United Nations (UN), each year, 13 million tons of plastic are thrown into the oceans.
