NAME:
All day long we use language for different purposes such as: wanting to convince someone of something, finding out about something, conveying an emotion, talking just for the sake of talking. And each of these functions is given a specific name. Note below:
1-Expressive or emotional function: When the sender's intention is to express their feelings, emotions. In songs, poetry, testimonies, interviews, among other memoirist texts, we find this function.
2- Conative or appealing function: When the intention of the message producer, that is, the sender, is to convince someone, influence, persuade. Example; in the essay-argumentative texts this function predominates.
3-Referential function: Information-centric. When the sender's intention is to transmit information clearly and objectively. Example: a bill for electricity, water, telephone, etc. When you give someone an address, you are also using this function.
4-phatic function: when the sender's concern is to keep in touch with the receiver. Examples: telephone conversations. The famous plim, plim of the Globo network which has the function of calling the viewer's attention (who got distracted during the commercial break).
5-Metalinguistic function: When the issuer's concern is aimed at explaining the code used. Example: Portuguese language dictionary that has Portuguese words with their meanings, language books Portuguese that are used to explain the Portuguese language, during Portuguese language classes when the teacher is questioned. The student says: _ please don't understand explain one more time? The teacher's answer will be a metalinguistic text, that is, he will be using the Portuguese language to explain the Portuguese language.
6-Poetic or aesthetic function: When the issuer's concern is focused on the message itself, on the arrangement of words, whether in the choice to draw the attention of the receiver, in the organization of words: Example poetry with rhythm, rhymes. An advertising text with slogans, sayings, etc.
