Thinking it was high time for his son to get married, an old king invited princesses from all over the world to a big party. As the prince did not sympathize with any of them, the monarch sent him to look for a young woman alone that he liked.
The boy mounted his horse and left. It did not take her long to reach a forest, where she came across an orange tree from which hung three golden oranges. He picked them up and went on.
Soon after, she felt thirsty because it was very hot. Then she took out her knife, peeled an orange and cut it in half. Isn't it that out of the orange came a beautiful girl with eyes the color of the sky and hair the color of the sun? “A sip of water, please!” she begged. The prince could not grant his request, and the girl disappeared.
The sun was burning, and the traveler wasted no time in cutting another orange. A young woman with green eyes like a forest pond and red hair like a hibiscus flower asked her for a drink of water and, as she did not receive it, she disappeared.
The prince continued his journey and finally found a source, where he quenched his thirst. By this time he was hungry and so he cut the third orange. A girl with hair as black as a raven and a face as white as jasmine begged him: "A sip of water, please." The boy cupped his hands, filled them from the fountain, and gave him something to drink. Thus freed her from the enchantment of a witch, who had imprisoned her in magic oranges.
The prince and the girl were married and shortly thereafter ascended the throne. When the witch heard about it, she ran into the city, went to the palace gate, and began to proclaim: “Craps! Beautiful staples! Who wants to buy?”. The queen heard her trading and told her to enter. The fake saleswoman then showed him a hairpin that had a pearl at the end and asked him to put it in her hair. The young sovereign bent down, and the witch jabbed the hairpin into her head with all her strength. Instantly the queen turned into a white dove and flew into the forest.
The king was there, hunting, and he captured the beautiful bird with the intention of offering it to his wife. However, on returning to the palace, he searched everywhere for the queen and did not find her.
In the months that followed, his only consolation was the white dove, which reminded him of his lost love. One day, stroking the little animal's head, she felt something hard: it was the pearl of the hairpin. He immediately pulled it up and before his eyes his beautiful queen took the bird's place.
Upon discovering that all this was the work of the witch, the monarch ordered his men to arrest her...
