How did capoeira come about?

Researchers believe that it arose from a ritual called zebra dancing, practiced in Angola, Africa. It was the Bantus, brought to Brazil at the time of slavery, who began to practice it here. At first, it was just a show of skill. It then turned into a game of attack and defense, and for a time the practice was banned. Today capoeira is a martial art, practiced as a game of dexterity, without violence.
