The Republic of Brazil was proclaimed by Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca, on November 15, 1889. On that day, the Monarchy came to an end and a provisional government was established. The former provinces formed, together with the central power, the United States of Brazil. The new form of government, the Federative Republic, was announced in decree number one, written by Ruy Barbosa.
And who was Ruy Barbosa? An important character in the history of Brazil. He was deputy, senator, minister and candidate for the Presidency of the Republic twice, but he did not win. He presided over the Brazilian Academy of Letters and fought for the people's freedom of choice and opinion.
